  • Project selected for LogoLounge 5

    September 8Announcements

I’m very happy to announce the first published project for RSD is the mark of Crossway Church. I worked very hard for my friends at Crossway and it’s paid off. The mark will appear in LogoLounge 5. LogoLounge is a prestigious series of identity volumes published every two years that showcases identity work by some of the most prolific designers in the world. Over 33,000 logos were submitted for the competition! The book is slated to hit shelves in June of 2009.

Though I’ve had numerous projects published before, this one is especially sweet, as it represents the first project recognized under Ryan Smoker Design. More good things to come!

Read more about the project here.

  • RSD turns 6 months old

    July 15Announcements

6 months in and I’m still at it. It went by very fast and I’m sure RSD’s first birthday will be here in no time.

When I think back and consider why I’ve been successful so far, I think it comes back to people. I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned from all the smart and interesting friends (including my lovely wife) that have helped and coached me along the way. RSD lives in great part because of your encouragement and help. Thank you so much!

I give a very big thank you to Jeremy Hess Photographers and Crossway Church for allowing me to create truly unique and beautiful solutions for their new branding efforts. I look forward to strengthening those relationships in the future.

Finally, thanks to Kyle Sollenberger for his help in developing this site. I owe you big time!

Here’s to the next 6 months and the years ahead! Give a shout, I’d love to hear from you.

  • Command X

    June 30Thoughts on Design

Command X was a “real-life” graphic design reality show that deputed at the AIGA National Conference in Denver, Colorado last year. I was fortunate enough to be selected out of a nationwide call for entries. The “show” was presided over by such design personalities as Michael Bierut, Brian Collins, Noreen Morioka and many others. It was simply ridiculous that I got to share stage time with these people.

I was chosen while I was still working at Go Welsh, and by happenstance the other designer at Go Welsh, Nichelle Narcisi, was chosen as well. We decided to keep journals and take pictures about our experiences. We pitched the idea to STEP and they decided to run a story about us. The article ran in January of 2008.

Needless to say it was one of the most enlightening moments of my career. I shared the stage with some amazing contestants, like Mike Burton from Little Jacket, and got to rub shoulders with the rockstars of the design world. It also opened my eyes to the potential that design offers as a career path. I hope to enjoy many rewarding years pursuing that path.

Special thanks goes to Bonnie Siegler and Emily Oberman for their encouragement. Check out the STEP article for the full story.

  • Getting Ready to Move

    June 23Announcements

RSD is relocating it’s offices to downtown Lancaster City. I’ll be sharing space with Tim Hoover and The Infantree on the fourth floor of 21 North Prince Street. It’s right across from the Fulton Theatre and a few floors above Prince Street Cafe.

Since we need to do some painting and renovating, I’m not sure when the exact move date will be, but I hope to be in by July. The space is truly beautiful, featuring original hardwood, exposed brick and a magnificent gallery room. It’s worth the trip up four flights of stairs, believe me!

  • New Site Launch

    June 23Announcements, Site Updates

Welcome to the new home of Ryan Smoker Design. It’s been a long time coming, but I finally designed a new website. And thanks to Kyle Sollenberger, my communication just got a big upgrade.

Working independently has been challenging and inspiring at the same time. Working with smart and talented people makes it all the more enjoyable.

Thanks to all those who’ve kept up with me so far. I’d love to hear from you, so keep in touch.
